Who Are We ?
Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc. is a
private, non-profit agency founded in 1977, with a mission to provide mentors
to children from primarily single-parent families in order to provide the extra time and
attention the children need to fulfill their potential.
Who Are the Children ?
Children are from Forsyth and Davie County as well as
Yadkin Valley.
The boys are ages 6 through 13 and the girls ages 6 thru 15. They are
primarily either
from single parent families or a grandparent who is raising the child. The children
must want a mentor to participate. The parent must give permission for the child
to participate.
Who Are the Volunteers ?
The volunteer mentors are men and women who are
seeking to make a difference in a child's life. The volunteers are reflective
of the entire spectrum of professions and ethnic groups. This includes people
in Sales, Advertising, Law, Medicine, Accounting, Secretarial, Banking, Fire
Safety and any other work setting you can think of. In addition to the "regular"
volunteers, we also recruit from three special groups:
- Retired or Senior Mentor Program
- People who are retired or are over the age of 55 make excellent role models.
You are in an ideal position to share your wisdom with a child. Retired or
Senior Mentors may choose to volunteer with a child either in the community
or at one of the local elementary schools.
- High School and College Student Program
- High school and college students are recruited to volunteer with elementary
school-age children. All of the activities occur at an elementary school near
the high school or college attended by the volunteer.
- Corporate Volunteer Program - This
is an ideal way for the busy corporate employee to use his or her lunch break
once a week to go to an elementary school near the work site and visit with
the child who needs a mentor. It is easy and convenient yet makes a big difference
in a child's life.
- Big Couples Program - This is a way
for couples to share their volunteer time. Little Brothers are matched with
a couple. Both partners act as a "Big" mentor to the child and he
receives two mentors who provide support and guidance.
All volunteers are carefully screened to ensure
that the children are matched with responsible, appropriate people. A personal
interview and reference checks are conducted.
