STORY OF A LIFETIME
Wanda Starke, WXII-12
In July of 1995, I was assigned to do a story about Big Brothers Big Sisters. During this assignment, I attended a picnic where I met a little girl named Courtney. I learned that she was growing up without a mother. Courtney and her story grabbed my heart that day.
After much thought, I decided that I could find an hour a week to be a friend to a child like Courtney, and I signed up. Can you imagine my delight when I found myself matched with the little girl from the picnic? Yes, Courtney was going to be my new little sister.
As we got to know each other, Courtney and I became fast friends. She reminded me of myself at her age, because she also loved reading and the theatre. We had a great time together. Courtney and I continued our match through her graduation from high school. One of my greatest joys, and proudest moments, was seeing her graduate from college, where she was a great student.
It’s been more than 20 years since I first met the little girl who followed me around at the Big Brothers Big Sisters picnic. This relationship was so life changing for me, that I went on to matches with two additional little girls…Aniya and Khamiya.
While I know I have made a difference in the lives of these three little girls, I know that in many ways, I am the one who received the most from my relationship with them. I am truly a better person for having known and spent time with these remarkable young ladies.
